Sophos: The CNN of Viruses? By boston.internet.com Staff July 8, 2002
The U.K. maker of corporate security software, with U.S. headquarters in Lynnfield, Mass., is introducing a news feed service that allows businesses, organizations and
home users to display the latest virus and Internet hoax information on Web sites and intranets.
"When it comes to combating computer viruses, knowledge is key," said Chris Wraight, a Sophos consultant. "With hundreds of new viruses unleashed each month
there is always the possibility that users will be caught off guard."
The feed is free and updated automatically as new threats emerge. Three versions are offered: the latest 10 viruses to appear; the month's most common viruses; and
the 10 most troublesome virus hoaxes of the past 24 hours.
The layout, design and color of the feeds can also be adapted to suit the overall design of the Web site. Administrators must insert a
piece of HTML code into their page for the service to work. It is also available as an XML RSS feed.
More information is available through a special section of the Sophos site. Now, if it can only get James Earl Jones to read voice-overs.
