Show to Focus on Grid's Competitive Edge By Paul Shread October 16, 2002
Grid technology is allowing companies to tap underutilized power and resources to perform complex computing tasks faster, shortening the amount of time it takes to
get their products on the market.
The second Grid Computing Planet Conference & Expo, to be held October 28-29 in Boston, will help attendees determine how they can utilize
Grid technology, what type of Grid application will work best for them, and what tools are available to get started. The two-day event will bring together Grid
technology researchers, developers, vendors and users to learn, exchange ideas and hear Grid computing success stories, and will feature an interactive exhibit floor
for Grid technology vendors to showcase their products and answer questions.
Keynote addresses will be delivered by Bret Greenstein, Project Executive, IBM Worldwide Grid Organization; Rene Copeland, Platform Computing's Vice
President for Government and Life Sciences sales; and Sara Murphy, Product Marketing Manager of HP's High Performance Technical Computing Group.
Panels at the conference will provide a Grid overview and information on using Grid technology to improve IT performance and harness the untapped processing
power of desktop PCs and other compute resources. Other panels will address the convergence of Grid computing and Web services, security issues, standards,
collaboration, and data Grid technology.
Ahmar Abbas, managing director of research and consulting firm Grid Technology Partners, has assembled a panel on Grid case studies. Grid computing is
increasing productivity and saving millions of dollars at leading companies across a wide range of industries. Officials from Fluent, the American Diabetes
Association, the Haas School Of Business at the University Of California at Berkeley, and Butterfly.net will describe how Grid computing has impacted their
business and bottom line.
Suzanne George of Globexplorer and Stephen Scott of Oak Ridge National Laboratory will reprise a popular panel from the first Grid Computing Planet conference
in San Jose in June on the organizational politics of Grids, including IT processes, policies, procedures and rules, as well as "selling" the Grid concept to sometimes
reluctant peers and colleagues.
In a panel on commercial Grid security issues, GridFrastructure President Dan Feldman will outline commercial requirements, contrast them with the standard
capabilities available today, and describe an implementation that directly addresses commercial needs.
Other speakers at the conference include Andrew Grimshaw, CTO and Co-founder of Avaki Corp.; Andrew Chien, CTO, Chairman and Co-founder of Entropia;
Jikku Venkat, Vice President for Engineering at United Devices; Frank Cicio, COO of DataSynapse; Geoff Brown, Technical Director of ATS Core Technologies
at Oracle Corporation; and Richard Freund, CTO of GridIQ.
The Grid Computing Planet Fall 2002 Conference & Expo will be held Monday and Tuesday, October 28-29, at the Sheraton Hotel in Boston.
Premier Sponsors for the conference are IBM and Platform Computing. Other sponsors and exhibitors include HP, Sun Microsystems, SeeBeyond and
DataSynapse. The event is hosted by GridComputingPlanet.com, EarthWeb.com, Jupiter Research and internet.com, and is produced by Jupitermedia Corporation.
