TOP 50

Both our Provider and Enabler lists remain the same for August, but our member companies have by no means been idle. With some good news and some bad news, we've got our eyes on them all as we consider any changes to September's list.

On the positive side, we heard some good news from our companies: NetLedger launched a new midmarket ERP solution (see NetLedger Brings ERP to the Midmarket); Computer Associates reaped financial benefits from its on-demand model (see CA: On-Demand Made Earnings Difference); PeopleSoft moved ahead in its J.D. Edwards acquisition (see PeopleSoft Closes J.D. Edwards Purchase), though the outcome of Oracle's bid still looms (see Oracle Prepared to Pay $7.5B for PeopleSoft); and Vocus and WebEx expanded their business lines through acquisition (see Vocus Acquires PRanywhere from LexisNexis and WebEx Buy Boosts Tech Assets).

Weighing in with bad news were EDS and BMC with disappointing earnings reports, which included layoffs at BMC (see IT Spending Woes: EDS Profits Slide 56% and BMC to Restructure After Earnings Warning); and a management shake-up at Grand Central calls for a close watch on the Web services enabler in the coming months (see Coup d'Etat at Grand Central).

Product updates from Concur, UpShot, IBM, BMC and Onyx show a continued effort from our list members to push the industry forward, while a few companies that are not yet in the Top 50 but are hovering nearby also made some positive moves this month. Yahoo is boosting its enterprise software tools (see Yahoo! Unleashes Small Business Site Builder, Yahoo! Bolsters Portal Suite with Oracle's Help); Ensim teamed with Microsoft to launch a new Operations Support System for the hosting industry (see Ensim, Microsoft Team on Hosting Infrastructure); and Centra enhanced its collaboration suite (see Centra Ships Centra 7).
