EDS adds pizzazz to ASP debut

Mar 3rd 2000: EDS marked its long-awaited launch as an ASP with a major presence at this week's Internet & Electronic Commerce Conference & Exposition (IEC) in New York. The bravura display eclipsed announcements by others at the show and by rival IT services giant CSC.

EDS chose the IEC as the venue to announce its Web Computing Suite of Services, a portfolio of web hosting, security, network services, and application services that it is offering either direct or through service provider partners using a wholesaler model. The services start at around a thousand dollars a month and scale to meet the needs of any size business, said the company.

This will be a $2 billion business for us in two years, Ken Capps, Global Media Counsel for EDS e.Solutions, told ASP News Review. We see the ASP marketplace as exploding in the next 6 to 12 months.

A raffle for a $46,000 Porsche helped attract visitors to the EDS stand, which stood at the entrance to the exhibition hall. When EDS has something to announce, we mean it, said Capps.

What EDS is doing now differently from the past is working with any size company," he added. "Attendees at the conference had a very positive response to our suite. On the first day, people came around the booth to check it out. By the second day, we got solid interest and sales leads.

In contrast, Computer Sciences Corp (CSC), another IT services behemoth, simply issued a press release to herald its own foray into the ASP marketplace. Its Web site and application hosting services will target dot-com startups and midmarket companies, yesterday's (Mar 2nd) statement said.

Other IEC announcements included a new e-commerce suite from USinternetworking, and the launch of an e-business ASP service by OAO Technology Solutions, which also this week announced signing a $5m three-year hosting contract with Qwest Communications.

Workplace e-commerce ASP Concur Technologies announced four new customers, including datamart vendor Sagent Technology, whose products are themselves offered by ASPs. Sabre Holdings and Ariba announced the creation of a new Internet-enabled business-to-business marketplace for the travel and transportation industry. Adero launched its Globalwise suite of services for deployment of e-commerce services.

FaceTime Communications announced the launch of a new version of its co-browsing product suite, available this month for a one time set up fee of $2,500. The customer care applications system includes instant messaging, email management, chat, and a 'Supportal' for business intelligence, reporting and collaboration.

ANALYSIS
A prominent Jungian once said that something new coming into consciousness begins as a rumor. The ASP phenomenon was still something of a rumor at IEC. Keynote speakers - an impressive range of e-commerce power brokers that included Barry Diller and Priceline founder, Jay Walker - focused their remarks on the consumer end of e-commerce rather than the exploding business to business market. However, the strategic placement of EDS in the vast IEC exposition hall may be the best news for the ASP industry; the rumor exploding into the collective consciousness as a full scale cyberspace revolution that lets the little guys compete with Goliath. Although tried and tested ASP models were more in evidence in the On Demand Digital Printing & Publishing Exposition right next door, where market leaders offering ASP end-to-end web based solutions for the printing and publishing industries slugged it out for potential customers.
